Title: Migration, Trauma, and Heterotopia: Bishop’s Poetry of Mobility ABSTRACT: Elizabeth Bishop is a renowned 20th-century American poet, whose poetry is marked by distinct forms of mobility. By illuminating the tripartite dimensions of intellectual migration, trauma narrative, and heterotopic exploration in her works, this paper highlights their reflective qualities, including her subvertion of authoritative discourses, embrace of self-disclosure, and celebration of inclusiveness. Bishop’s poetics of mobility dissolves boundaries, transcends binary oppositions, and constructs a pluralistic network of meanings that connects humanity and the world through deconstruction and reconstruction. Rooted in a philosophy of “the other,” her work not only exemplif ies the openness and creativity of artistic writing but also offers insights into the inclusiveness and shared development of diverse civilizations and the reconstruction of value systems. As a pivotal mineral in the digital age, coltan has become a focal point of global capitalist competition. While the extraction and trade of coltan drive the advancement of digital technologies, they also fuel violent conflict and social instability. Ruined portrays the complex interactions between various forces, uncovering the underlying structures in which power, capital, and violence are intertwined. This article analyzes these interactions across multiple timeframes: economic time, indigenous time, geological time, and the temporality of theatrical performance. It reveals how resource extraction shapes our perceptions of timescales and creates fractures and asymmetries within the global capitalist system. This essay examines the manifestations, cognitive schemas, and diversif ied nostalgic narratives in African American writer Octavia Butler’s Parable series, thereby roughly mapping the multifaceted pathways through which the American populace constructs stability in the context of neoliberalism. Butler depicts the collapse of a gated community to demonstrate how “regressive nostalgia,” fixed on an illusory past, fails to address real-world violence. Meanwhile, the resurgence of the far right exposes the consequences of nostalgic sentiment being manipulated by political discourses. In contrast, Lauren’s utopian vision embodies a practice of “reflective nostalgia,” grounded in a critical understanding of reality and envisioning an alternative future to transcend current constraints. Butler’s nostalgic writing serves as a prism for decoding the cultural politics of neoliberalism, unveiling the intricate relationship between literary narratives, social structures, ideologies, and cognitive psychology. Milkman is a prime example. Written in the post-Belfast Agreement era, the novel looks back on the 1970s to interrogate the Troubles heritage disenchanting the myth of violent masculinity, rendered hegemonic by the complicity of militant nationalism and patriarchy. It suggests ways to restore the politically disrupted life by emphasizing the importance of emotional interdependence in establishing more responsible gender and community relationships. This new trend not only underscores the pivotal role of emotions in new Troubles writing but also reflects how contemporary writers, represented by Anna Burns, rewrite long-standing issues like colonial trauma, historical burdens, and the legacy of violence. With the decline of the British Empire after two world wars, the patriotic Tolkien still regards Britain as a world leader and peacekeeper. He reflects in these novels on the weaknesses of the British national character and advocates a global vision, a sense of duty, traditional heroism, and tolerant multiculturalism in his attempts to reconstruct British national character for the maintenance of world peace and order. Within this world, the worth of the real is eroded amidst the proliferation of simulacra, leaving the postmodern individual to grapple with a boundless void and meaninglessness. But the sacred “aura” in the simulated world does not disappear; instead, it returns in a secularized and diversif ied manner. Alex, of Chinese-Jewish origin, is initially addicted to the simulated world but grows into a manipulator of the simulated movie. He constructs a post-secular path back to reality with the help of the Kabbalah in Judaism and the Chinese Zen classic The Pictures of Ten Bulls. By leveraging the symbolic exchange of death, he dismantles the logic dominated by binary opposition and secular rationality. In doing so, he not only extricates himself from the pessimistic construal of human existence in Baudrillard’s simulation theory but also aligns himself with Habermas’s constructive post-secular perspective. Through the dictionary, letter and story as mediums of language, the novel examines the pursuit, dislocation and reconstruction of Indigenous Australian cultural identity, exposing forms of white colonial violence, their influence, and their evolution in the current era. Meanwhile, this novel incorporates Indigenous Australian and non-Anglo-Celtic perspectives to represent the contested histories and cultural identities of both Whites and Aboriginal people within a polyphonic structure. It tells a story of an English clockmaker, James Cox, who is invited by Emperor Qianlong to travel to China and make clocks for him. This novel disrupts linear chronological sequence through a spatialized narrative and constructs a literary space by observing and depicting Chinese space as a romantic landscape endowed with multiple cultural connotations such as mourning and healing. Cox’s travel to China is also a quest for a spiritual home through self-reflection. With this aesthetic experiment in spatial narrative, the author attempts to think beyond the binary opposition between Chinese and Western culture in order to construct a poetic refuge for the shattered postmodern subjectivity. This paper employs postcolonial theory, magical realism, and Dan Shen’s theory of covert narrative to decode this submerged allegory within the seafaring tale. Specif ically, Pi’s multifaceted religious conversions in Pondicherry, India before the shipwreck metaphorically reflect India’s complex cultural identity in the postcolonial context. Meanwhile, the fraught dynamics of confrontation, domination, and interdependence among Pi, the Bengal tiger Richard Parker, and other animals on the lifeboat allegorize Canada’s internal conflicts under multiculturalism, as well as its simultaneous resistance to and reliance on American hegemony. Through the fantastical narrative vehicle of a boy’s survival journey with a wild tiger, the novel symbolically reconstructs the identity dilemmas of both India and Canada in the postcolonial era. This dual-layered narrative allows the novel to retain the enchanting allure of its surface story while carrying profound national-political undertones, demonstrating the incisive meditation of Martel, as an immigrant writer, on the complexities of cultural identity. Taking the perspective of postcolonial ecocriticism, this essay analyzes how the novel exposes environmental injustices such as land grabbing and destructive development of virgin forests, and the inter-species injustice of wildlife poaching, as well as its criticism of colonialism, racism and speciesism under the colonial ideology that give rise to these injustices. The essay argues that Kulet speaks for the endangered wild animals, the indigenous people, and all the oppressed groups who are unable to f ight back, expressing his faith in ecological justice by imaginatively endowing the younger generation with the power of decolonization to achieve justice. Moreover, Objecto Quase places human-object relationships within political contexts. On the one hand, it foreshadows Latour’s concept of the “parliament of things,” where various objects intervene in the political f ields through representation, exerting political influence and dissolving the once-purif ied boundaries between nature and society, human and non-human. On the other hand, the stories depict the “state of exception” in human politics brought about by the disappearance of objects. She intertwines individual emotions with social structures and historical memory, constructing a form of “transboundary realism” that bridges autobiography and f iction, class aesthetics, and literature and ethnography. Merging autobiography and f iction, she treats personal writing as actualized truth and an integral part of history while conceiving f iction as a potential reality. Transcending class aesthetics, she democratizes aesthetic experience through her choice of linguistic tenses, everyday speech, and depictions of objects. Intersecting literature and ethnography, she seeks collective universality through individual experience, focusing on the personal and the contemporary as subjects of writing, and distinguishing herself from traditional anthropological ethnographic documentation. This “transboundary” practice reconfigures the relationship between realist literature and modernity, transforming the former not only into a mode of expressing the world but also of historical production, imbued with profound reflexivity. Compared with feminist narratology, postcolonial narratology, which similarly emphasizes the integration of classical narrative poetics with political issues, has better maintained its independence and distinctiveness. We need to address the following questions: What is the essential difference between postcolonial narratology and feminist narratology in viewing classical narratology? How does Prince’s postcolonial narratology defend and develop classical narrative poetics in a tactful way? What are the new developments in postcolonial narratology? It argues that reflection theory must break free from a mechanistic epistemological framework by emphasizing an aesthetic and dynamic form of reflection, while rigorously engaging those passages in Marx’s original texts that appear to challenge its premises. The people-centered principle insists that literary creation must be grounded in the people and oriented toward proletarian emancipation, yet must avoid flattery and populist indulgence. From the standpoint of “Returning to Marx,” an exclusive emphasis on realism in art does not align with the original intentions of Marx and Engels. The paper proceeds to explore the theoretical resources and development of Western Marxism, and reflects on points of convergence between Chinese cultural tradition and Marxism. Drawing on these insights, through a cross-cultural perspective, it seeks to integrate the essence of contemporary Western Marxist literary theory with key tenets of traditional Chinese culture, particularly its emphasis on holistic and systemic thinking. This synthesis aims to advance Marxist literary theory by incorporating contemporary foreign theoretical achievements into the framework of Chinese cultural tradition, thereby paving the way for an innovative and far-reaching Marxist literary theoretical system. She rose to fame with A Raisin in the Sun and actively devoted herself to social movements for Black equality. In the complex circumstances of the era, she and her writings often became the subject of controversy. The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window was her second play successfully staged, embodying her exploration and critique of Black radicalism as well as her own identity as a rebel. However, when staged in 1964, the play received a lukewarm response and was totally forgotten after her death. In 2023, The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window was revived in New York, sparking heated discussion and revealing the play’s forward-looking ideas and enduring vitality. Meanwhile, with the rise of scholarship on contemporary African American radical traditions, Hansberry’s radical inclinations and The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window have once again drawn academic attention and reinterpretation. This paper f irst presents the controversies and contemporary reconstructions surrounding Hansberry’s identity as a radical, outlining the context in which The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window was produced. It then investigates Hansberry’s radical thought by analyzing the play in dialogue with white liberalism. Finally, it discusses how, in the current revival of Black radicalism and resistance movements, the play challenges the myth of a post-racial era and offers critical insights for white liberals. This narrative strategy not only revives the patriarchal culture and cyclical historiography common in Victorian literature but also reflects the socio-cultural stagnation of neoliberal Britain in the 1980s. Adopting hauntology as the theoretical framework, this essay examines the representations of traumatic ghosts, female ghosts, and cultural ghosts in the novel, and reveals how history haunts the present in spectral forms and how individuals seek alternatives in a cultural context where the future has seemingly disappeared. Most earlier disease writings mainly serve narrative purposes or convey the symbolic meaning of disease, but Albee takes advantage of the embodied nature of drama, using the actor’s body as a vehicle to present illness and thereby expanding its medial function and phenomenological resonance. From the perspective of perceptual phenomenology, “illness as metaphor” has a media function (isolating the individual from others), and the space in which illness appears acquires the qualities of a spectacle (with the stage space serving as a metonym for the illusions of capitalist culture). Considered within the specif ic historical context of his work, the illnesses and crises of Albee’s protagonists collectively mirror the social crises of mid-20th-century America, namely excessive suburbanization and the decay of inner cities. His work not only portrays the profound disruptions caused by the uneven economic dynamics of American suburbanization but also reflects on the erosion of civic subjectivity by state power in the capitalist society, expressing deep concerns about modern civilization. In her historical f iction The Night Watchman, Louise Erdrich challenges the authority of grand historical narratives by examining the daily lives and individual memories of ordinary people. Through the juxtaposition of literary f iction and historical records, the novel writes an alternative version of American history and reveals the true intentions behind off icial assimilation policies that aimed at eliminating the Native Americans. The three key measures in U.S. Indian policy — the Termination Policy, which ended tribal sovereignty and independence; the Relocation Program, which fostered internal divisions within tribes; and government boarding schools, which severed cultural transmission across generations—collectively inflicted devastating harm on Native Americans. Erdrich not only rewrites the history of racial persecution and tribal struggle obscured in mainstream accounts but also connects the community’s survival experiences to the lives of contemporary Native Americans, offering artistic pathways toward their survival. Critics have long interpreted the “cyber” part of this novel from different perspectives, while the “punk,” another important root of this genre, has not received suff icient attention. The novel is deeply connected to punk music, and Gibson has deliberately infused punk’s musical and aesthetic elements into his work, which resonates with the theories of musical novel. Furthermore, this novel can be regarded as a literary simulation of Gibson’s experience of music, as he represents the body’s experience of punk music through suggestive language, highlighting the resonance of music and bodily movement. He argues that our body responds to music with a unique rhythm of heartbeat that has the potential to break through the shackles of cyberspace.
