Title: On 9/11 Ashes and the Narrative of Big History in Zone One

ABSTRACT: Colson Whitehead’s Zone One is a post-apocalyptic horror novel.

Whitehead utilizes the zombie genre and the ashes from the 9/11 attack to present a narra-

tive about Big History. On one hand, the 9/11 ashes show the impact of terrorist activity on

the climate, and the changes that human activities make to the surface of the planet, reveal-

ing human beings as inhabiting a form of Anthropocene temporality. On the other hand, the

hybridity of the 9/11 ashes—city ash and body ash—renders it a hyperobject, beyond

human control, but ushering human beings and ash into “the world without us, ” and creating, in the meantime, a brand new world. Zone One conveys Whitehead’s idea of Big History: that human beings live only for a moment in time, disrupting human hypocrisy and anthropocentrism.

Title: The Cultural Implications of Vehicles in Cormac McCarthy’s Border Trilogy

ABSTRACT: Vehicles are both a symbol of subject mobility and a point from

which we can examine changes in human culture. In the Cormac McCarthy’s Border

Trilogy, the horse, as the major mode of transportation in agricultural society, symbolizes

nature’s residual culture. However, cars and planes, as important modes of transportation

in industrial society, are products of technological modernity and respectively signify

dominant and emergent technological cultures. Through recording the transformation of

vehicles, the Border Trilogy reflects on the decline of traditional Western culture in the

history of American modernity and explores the outlet for a new mode of Western culture

in the technical context.

Title: Linguistic Features and Post-Colonial Power Relations in Fools Crow

ABSTRACT: The power relation of the colonizer and the colonized in James

Welch’s Fools Crow is subverted through the distribution of English and Blackfoot in the

discourse of the narrator as well as character communications. The “bleeding” where the

Anglo-American doctor applies Blackfoot in his narrative implies the possibility of over-

coming national prejudices and bridging the gaps of cultures. However, the binary opposi-

tion or blending between the colonizer and the colonized leads to the horrific “glottophagie”

of the tribal languages of the Crows and the Spotted Horse People, revealing complex

dynamic powers among the colonized. Nevertheless, tribes of different languages resort to

the sign language as a means of communication in resonance with the historical circum-

stances of stories, highlighting both commonality and heterogeneity within the colonized.

Title: The Dystopian Expression in Caryl Churchill’s Recent Plays

ABSTRACT: One of the leading British playwrights, for nearly half a century Caryl

Churchill’s recent plays tend to unveil anthropocentric utopian illusions through dra-

matic displays of death, plague, famine, depression and other predicaments of survival,

establishing an imagined ideal world through her dystopian style. This article discusses

Churchill’s probe into an intimate community of shared destiny from three aspects: medial

penetration, a spiritual wasteland, and a deathly fatalism. Her dramatic creation in recent

Title: Spatial Image of the Occult World: Shadow Writing in Hawksmoor

ABSTRACT: As a major scholar of the contemporary London psychogeography

renaissance, Peter Ackroyd chooses the spatial image of shadow to explore the occult

world of London in his novel Hawksmoor. The spatial image of shadow in Hawksmoor

containssolid cultural, psychological, narrative, cognitive and historical value. It is the en-

trance into the occult world represented inAckroyd’s novel. As a spatial entity, shadow is

the outer spatial projection of a double metaphor, implying the parallel narrative line, the

reappearance of doppelgangers, and the binary between body and soul. It represents the

binary confrontation between the two schools of thought: the worship of reason versus the

worship of Satanism. By means of the spatial image of shadow, Akcroyd carries on the

tradition of “double” in British psychogeography literature and uses postmodern narrative

modes, such as temporal transposition, to examine the fundamental idea of human nature

in conflict via binary oppositions between dark and light, evil and kindness, reason and

Satanism.

Title: Things with Vitality: McGregor’s Philosophical Thoughts on Things in So

Many Ways to Begin

ABSTRACT: Since childhood, the protagonist David in Jon McGregor’s So Many

Ways to Begin has been collecting discarded objects, and this shapes his professional

choice to become amuseum curator. With his fetish for objects, David is completely un-

der their control; objects shape his feelings and actions. This novel offers the clearest

elucidation of McGregor’s philosophy of things. He stresses the subjectivity and vitality

of things: how things, as actants, can make human beings act through the intra-action be-

tween human and nonhuman. McGregor’s theory of non-anthropocentrism aims to disrupt

the binary opposition of object and subject, mind and matter. In terms of his understand-

Title: The Cross-cultural Writing of Metaphors in Frère d’Ȃme

ABSTRACT: The works of writers with multicultural backgrounds can break from

the constraints of a single perspective, enabling rediscovery and expressions based on cul-

tural integration, thus helping to promote the construction of world literature. The novel

Frère d’Ȃme by David Diop, a French writer of Senegalese descent, focuses on a long-lost

historical group, namely the indigenous infantry of Senegal in the First World War. This

is an allegorical novel, the product of African culture mixed with European culture. Using

the French language as a medium, the author draws rich images from nature and customs

of Africa. Through interweaving European literary texts, he constructs a fantastic meta-

phorical world. This cross-cultural writing offers a new perspective on world literature,

reflecting on war and colonialism.

Title: Narratorial Identity in Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments

ABSTRACT: Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments is a novel about narratorial iden-

tity. The innermost workings of tyrannical Gilead are explored through the narrative voic-

es of three women protagonists who courageously pursue their identity. The novel shows

how the suppressed groups and individuals strive to expand their boundaries of cognition

within the oppressive field of discourse constructed by Gilead’s fundamentalist ideology.

Title: Gender Politics of Cancer: A Critique of Medicine’s Discourse of Knowledge

in Atwood’s Disease Narrative

ABSTRACT: As a disease, cancer is not only a substance, but also a metaphor in

contemporary literature. In Margaret Atwood’s disease narrative, cancer constitutes a

unique “narrative constellation”. Based on an analysis of the historical relationship be-

tween the “cancer narrative constellation” and gender politics, this article focuses on

breast cancer in Bodily Harm with an aim to reveal how Atwood artistically uses cancer

as a metaphor to present the micropower of medical knowledge exerted on women on the

one hand and, on the other hand, how she disentangles the ideology attached to disease by

self-referentially criticizing the phenomenon of using disease as metaphors. These two as-

ABSTRACT: English translation of contemporary Russian drama can be divided

into four categories: avant-garde drama, drama by female playwrights, “New Drama” and

post-modern drama. Focusing on daily life and moral ethics, English reception of these

plays involves attentiveness to enlightenment ideas and aesthetic rationality. The transla-

Title: On the Confusion of Ethical Identity and Ethical Thinking in Haruki Muraka-

mi’s Norwegian Wood

ABSTRACT: Norwegian Wood is a classic of Haruki Murakami, reflecting the con-

fusion of ethical identity that prevails in Japanese postmodern society. The novel explores

a series of ethical problems through describing the characters’ confusion and choice of an

ethical identity. Finally, it develops its ethical thinking on self-selection by revealing their

rational consciousness, which solves the problem of their confusion about their identity.

Based on Murakami’s life experience and ethical contexts in and outside the novel, this

article argues that the student movement that lasted for more than ten years after the war

is one of the important sources of Murakami’s ethical thinking. He expresses his ethical

concern for the fate of an individual, and reflects, ethically, on history and reality in pro-

Title: Globalization, Disability, and Species: Animal Narrative in Indra Sinha’s Ani-

mal’s People

ABSTRACT: Indra Sinha’s Animal’s People is a representative work of contempo-

rary Indian English literature. Based on Sindha’s historical memory and social responsi-

bility, the author creates a diverse animal narrative through mixing fictional and realistic

representations, revealing the intertwining of power between the human Other and the ani-

mal Other, unearthing the internal connection between speciesism and racism/ableism, and

criticizing the anthropocentrism inherent within the human and animal binary. Global jus-

tice, disability rights and animal ethics all involve, in different ways, the discursive con-

struction of ideology and moral philosophy. The animal issue is not only about the surviv-

Title: The Skin Trope and Myth of Post-Racial America in Morrison’s God Help the

Child

ABSTRACT: God Help the Child is Toni Morrison’s first book on contemporary

American life. This book reconstructs the scene of racism through the trope of skin ata-

vism. It builds a bridge between the past and the present, enabling Morrison to meditate

on such issues as colorism and black consumption in the so-called post-racial era and ex-

pose the absurdity of the post-racial myth in America.

Title: On the Inheritance and Extension of Shakespeare in Soyinka’s Writing

ABSTRACT: Wole Soyinka is the first African Nobel Prize winner. He is not only a

notable expert in Shakespeare studies but also an inheritor of Shakespeare’s dramaturgy,

and is often called “Shakespeare in Africa”. Soyinka’s work reflects his skills at integra-

tion and innovation. In his work, he combines the African tradition and the aesthetics of

contemporary drama with Shakespeare’s humanitarian thought, social critique, and vivid

characterization. The result is a series of plays that smack of Shakespeare but are uniquely

Soyinka. Soyinka thus excavates the modern values of Shakespeare’s plays and makes a

contribution to today’s world drama.

Title: Raymond Williams and British Marxism since 1945

ABSTRACT: Raymond Williams once divided Marxism in Britain since 1945 into

three categories: populism, culturalism, and reformism. However, Terry Eagleton, Stuart

Hall, E. P. Thompson in turn used these three terms to criticize Williams’s cultural theory.

This article examines Williams’s reflection on these categories and their relationships with

his concepts such as “culture”, “common culture”, “popular culture”, and “cultural revo-

lution.” There are elements of populism, culturalism and reformism in William’s thought,

but his position is not abstract or unchanging, but involved in a dynamic and complex

connection.

Title: Rewriting King Arthur and Chivalry in Harry Potter

ABSTRACT: Chivalry, as the core of English feudal aristocratic culture, shows a

continuous influence on British culture after the Middle Ages. The Harry Potter series,

by contemporary British writer J. K. Rowling, feature the adventures and growth of the

titular hero, Harry Potter, with an emphasis on the similarity between Harry and his vi-

cious rival Voldemort. Based on Raymond Williams’s theory of culture, this essay ana-

lyzes the dynamic interrelationship between different forms of British culture embodied

in the Harry Potter series. The similarity between Harry and Voldemort results from their

shared origins in King Arthur, a core figure of English chivalric literature, and their em-

bodiment of different aspects of chivalry. The outcome of their conflict reveals the role of

chivalry within contemporary British culture. Through intertextual reconstruction, Rowl-

ing’s works reflect a selective incorporation of the aristocratic culture of chivalry into the

dominant British capitalist culture, with Harry’s new chivalry serving as a supplementary

instruction on individualism.

Title: Constellation, Litheness, and Chaos: The Stylistic Experiment in Primeval and

Other Times

ABSTRACT: In Primeval and Other Times, Olga Tokarczuk explores and recounts

the world. The novel adopts a unique “constellation” narrative structure. Through cou-

pling, proliferation and intertextuality, its narration forms a dialectical relationship be-

tween independence and unity. Moreover, the novel takes a “gentle” approach in a lithe

style. Its poetic thinking illuminates scientific thinking, emphasizes the significance of

non-linearity, instability and disorder, and offers a profound poetics of chaos. Primeval

and Other Times is a pioneering stylistic experiment, which demonstrates the “encyclope-

dic” border crossing that characterizes Tokarczuk’s world-exploring novels.

Title: Decentralized Transformation of Japanese Axis Society in An Artist of the

Floating World

ABSTRACT: Discourse highlights social transformations and enables a concrete de-

scription of specific social patterns at a given time. An Artist of the Floating World by Ka-

zuo Ishiguro depicts three aspects of the decentralized transformation of “Japanese Axis

Society” after World War II: a declining social landscape, with cracks in the subjectivity of

Japanese society itself; interest-driven social relationships causing heterogeneous changes

in the society; and social values manifest in the discrepancy between ideology and behav-

ior. Analyzing the power of discourse based on discourse construction, this article tries to

reveal the “decentralization” of “Japanese Axis Society” in terms of its subject image and

explore the significance of Ishiguro’s portrayal of Japan’s various social transformations.
