Title: On the Growth Themes of American Childrens Literature in the Twenty-First Century

ABSTRACT: In traditional European childrens literature, growth is described as the dynamic developing process of children from innocence to experience, in which the contradiction between the unique value of individuals and social conventions should be properly balanced. However, in striving to escape the smothering control and influence of European culture and to construct its own national identity, the United States has planted the spirit of rebellion and self-examination in its childrens literature. Children usually question the values and norms of the adult world. Twenty-first century American childrens literature further expands this rebellious spirit and highlights childrens subjectivity and identification as its most prominent theme. Dystopian childrens literature constructs an imaginary space not restricted by secular standards, in which children become the hope and power to construct a new world. Children begin to recognize their identity in the context of multiculturalism, accepting their uniqueness and realizing their national identity. Faced with a series of changes, children also begin to re-recognize the subjectivity of self-identity in the multicultural context, acknowledging their national identity while accepting their own unique attributes.

Title: Home-State Anxiety in the Post-9/11 Era: The Landscape of Fear in Richard Fords The Lay of the Land

ABSTRACT: In the novel The Lay of the Land by contemporary American writer Richard Ford, unexpected daily events, such as a murder reported in a newspaper, the collapse of an old building, terrorist attacks outside a restaurant, shooting rampages, and family breakups, form a horrific landscape, reflecting the publics invisible concern about the collapse of order, which in turn reflects the psychological trauma caused by the 9/11 disaster. Ford does not explore the root cause of the 9/11 accident from the perspective of opposition or accuse others of threats to and persecution of the United States. Rather, he examines the imperceptible problems in the American political system from an internal perspective. By returning to the political context of 2000, Ford exposes social problems such as racial discrimination, class division, and gun control, and deconstructs the grand narratives of history, war, and politics. These reflect his anxiety over national security and the landscape of fear in political life in the post-9/11 period.

Title: Approaching the “Hierarchy of Civilization” in James Welch’s Fools Crow

ABSTRACT: The “hierarchy of civilization” refers to a discourse that ignores diachronic

differences of civilization among nations and ranks them on the basis of their synchronic development. It privileges Western civilization, upholding a Western-dominated order. In his historical novel Fools Crow, James Welch deconstructs the progressive connotations of the “hierarchy of civilization” in American westward movement by means of linguistic hybridity, adaptation of epic hero stories, and mixed emplotment. From the perspective of cultural relativism, Welch reevaluates the Native American philosophy of land, ecology, and collectivism and probes into the fundamental differences between Native American civilization and Western civilization, so as to oppose totalitarianism and advocate a new perception of equality, mutual learning, reciprocity, and coexistence among different civilizations.

Title: A Study of the Demon in The Exorcist

ABSTRACT: As a classic motif in literature, the demon has always been a projection of social psychology and a symptom of problematic times. Combining historical study and horror aesthetics, this paper analyzes the source, evil, and horror of the demon Pazuzu in The Exorcist. Through clarifying and tracing the religious and cultural origins of Pazuzu, it uncovers William Peter Blattys intention as well as why he appropriates the demon. It also argues that Blatty uses Pazuzu as a functional horror element to drive the complete horror novel and presents a diverse horror aesthetics. By describing the incident of demonic possession, the novel superimposes the bodies of Pazuzu and the young girl Regan into an apparatus of multiple political, social, and cultural meanings to criticize both demonic and empirical evil, while advocating Gods goodness. Moreover, it pinpoints the crux of the times and reflects on the times in a way that re-enchants the world, thus exploring the fears and anxieties of the American public and providing an emotional

message for the readers.

Title: Supplement, Inversion, and Fluidity: Variables of Whiteness in Bastard out of Carolina

ABSTRACT: The study of whiteness should certainly examine its constant of structural race advantage and privilege, but its variables resulting from dialogues between race and class cannot be overlooked either. There are power differences and stratifications within the whites, giving rise to othergroups like poor whites, and therefore contributing to the ambiguity and fluidity of white identity. In Dorothy Allisons semi-autobiographical novel Bastard out of Carolina, the poor white girl Bone initially performs whiteness to compensate for the lack of power in class relations. Frustrated, she violates the dominant narrative, subverts white supremacy, and further achieves the fluidity of identity while crossing the racial line. This paper analyzes the complexity, variability, and uncertainty of whiteness, aiming to explore possibilities of deconstructing whiteness and reshaping the power framework.

Title: Hurricane Katrina Narratives and Racial Politics in Salvage the Bones

ABSTRACT: African American author Jesmyn Ward provides a profound indictment of the racial issues surrounding Hurricane Katrina incident in her National Book Award-winning novel Salvage the Bones. The novel depicts the 12-day experience of a young African American girl, Esch, and her family in a coastal town in Mississippi before and after the hurricane, painting a narrative panorama of the Black Anthropocene. This article aims to explore, from a climate justice perspective coupled with the historical and policy backdrop of the United States, how Hurricane Katrina portrays the disposable environments of Southern African American families, the vulnerable bodies of African American women, and the companion animals of the African American community. The paper further elucidates the land dispossession and climate debt borne by African American families, the social stigma and loss of bodily rights faced by African American women, and the biological competitions endured by the African American community. In sum, Ward successfully breaks through the boundaries of race, gender, and species to pursue a better vision of handling interconnectedness among all species.

Title: The Disabled Body and Ethics of Science and Technology in Geek Love

ABSTRACT: Geek Love explores the limits and consequences of body modification by way of disabled characters, and represents the anti-evolutionaryphenomenon of the human body in postmodern society in an allegorical way. Resulting from the abuse of science and technology, the natural boundary of disabled bodies in the novel is challenged, which demonstrates the complex relationship between the body and technology. The reason why body modification goes to the extreme, thus leaving the body impaired and deformed, cannot be separated from the operation of consumerism. The novel represents the ethical dilemmas and crises caused by body modification in multiple dimensions through the disabled body, and warns of ethical deficiency in the research and application of science and technology.

Title: Recontextualized Rewriting of Antigone in Home Fire

ABSTRACT: Contemporary British writer Kamila Shamsie rewrites Antigone in her novel Home Fire, which gives new meaning to how marginal groups should challenge absolute authority. Recontextualizing the conflict between Antigone and Creon in Britain, Shamsie depicts the plight of British Muslims and their citizenship crisis in the era of global counter-terrorism.Foregrounding the minor characters in Antigone, Shamsie explores the deep reasons why Western Muslim families fall into the terrorist circle, and reveals the extremist essence of Western counter-terrorism strategies. Replacing the contradiction ofburying or notin the original play with the argument ofreturning home or not,”Shamsie exposes citizenship as a privilege and criticizes legal discrimination in Britain. Shamsie s ingenious appropriation of Antigone demonstrates the modern connotation of classical Greek tragedies and contemporary writersresponsibility.

Title: A Posthuman Biopolitical Interpretation of Caryl Churchills The Skriker

ABSTRACT: In The Skriker, by resorting to English folk tales, contemporary British playwright Caryl Churchill creates an underworld spirit named the Skriker, a combination of human beings, animals, objects, and ghosts. Through the cyborg monsters various modifications to its body and lifeform, the play indicates the survival predicament of human and non-human existence in the post-human era and suggests a solution to biopolitical problems. Different from previous interpretations of The Skriker as a utopian or dystopian fable, this paper, in line with biopolitics theory, identifies the plays view of posthuman biopolitics as vucatopiandue to its probe into the hybridity of the subject of posthuman biopolitics, the complexity of technological intervention in life, and the uncertainty of the relationship between human and non-human lives. The paper argues that The Skriker is a creative manifesto which alerts us to maintain the rational, sober, and critical consciousness of humanism in the posthuman biopolitical system, with cooperation between human, technology and environment.

Title: Quantum Ethics in Copenhagen

ABSTRACT: The contemporary British drama Copenhagen by Michael Frayn uses a non-linear narrative structure and postmodernist stage techniques to re-enact the mysterious meeting in Copenhagen in 1941 between Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg, two famous scientists who pioneered quantum mechanics. It is a novel quantum ethics drama that incorporates many elements of quantum narrative and ethics of science and technology. This paper finds that the plays quantum ethics has three levels in its narrative structure. The first level is the ethical cognition of the same atomic model structure. Many dramatic factors, such as plot, characterization, topics, and stage design, are like a quantum probability cloudsurrounding the core ethical issue of whether a conscientious scientist can develop an atomic bomb, jointly showing a picture similar to the quantum meta-ethical cognition picture of wave-particle duality and its superposition and entanglement states. The second level is the ethical power release of energy level transition. Heisenbergs trip to Copenhagen was an energy level transition, which caused fission like a neutron hitting an atomic nucleus, releasing huge energy. The two mens mutual testing, confrontation, collision, and fission revealed the moral anxiety of the two scientists about developing nuclear weapons. The third level is the observer effect of Schr.dingers cat.

The repeated performances of the Copenhagen meeting formed multiple interpretations and self-confessions which, like the collapse of superpositions and wave functions, are deeply influenced by different observers such as playwrights and historians, reaching a pluralistic and quantumized ethical view.

Title: Marxism in Sally Rooneys Beautiful World, Where Are You

ABSTRACT: While Sally Rooneys previous literary works occasionally show elements

of Marxism, her latest book, Beautiful World, Where Are You, explicitly employs Marxism to demonstrate how working-class millennials have been exploited and alienated in capitalist society and how money undermines intimate relationships. By writing about work, pay, housing, and the mortgage of workers and editors, Rooney also illustrates how the millennial proletariat has become enmeshed in an unfavorable economic predicament. The so-called beautiful worldis what Marx describes as a world full of love where individuals can achieve liberation and development. People acknowledge desires, appreciate eros, and express love in non-repressed reality so that the world and reason can get linked in new ways.

Title: Negative Emotion and Social Justice in Contemporary Australian Indigenous Fiction

ABSTRACT: Post-colonial affective study is a hot topic in contemporary Australian indigenous literature. Alexis Wrights Carpentaria and Claire Colemans Terra Nullius are two narratives embedded in the historical context of European colonization depicting the consequences of traumatic aboriginal history. A view from the intersection of post colonial studies and affective literary studies considers these narratives not just as a challenge to the dominant Eurocentric views of white Australian official historiography, but also as a strategic utilization of negative emotions to foster social justice. Through representations of historical trauma, grief, and the topos of the vulnerable self, these narratives are expected to induce shame and guilt in their non-indigenous readers. These moral emotions are thought to be associated with greater empathy and to have constructive social and personal consequences. By placing in dialogue an apocalyptic novel and a piece of speculative post-apocalypse fiction written by two contemporary female Australian indigenous authors, this article attempts to make a case for perceiving traumatic grief in this particular context as a positive emotion which has the potential of fostering social justice. This perception stands in sharp contrast with the belief, prevalent in European and American contexts, that negative emotions are undesirable and inappropriate.

Title: The “Poetic Dwelling” of Neanderthals in The Inheritors

ABSTRACT: The origin of modern man is a central issue in current academia. The study of Neanderthals, the closest race to modern man, could help solve the mystery of human origins. Golding’s novel The Inheritors depicts the relationship between Neanderthals and the New Men, modern man’s remote ancestors. In the novel, Neanderthals “poetically dwell on the earth” exerting no mastery over the planet, but living in the primal oneness of the earth, the sky, the divinities, and the mortals. The novel expresses the possibility of interbreeding between Neanderthals and the New Men, suggesting that Neanderthals’ poetic quality can bridge the subject-object divide of modern man and alleviate humanity’s overreliance on scientific rationality. Therefore, scientific rationality and humanity are likely to be integrated in the future.

Title: A Study of Coetzee’s African Writing of Cosmopolitanism: Taking Life & Times of Michael K as a Typical Case

ABSTRACT: One of the important dimensions of J. M. Coetzee’s African novels is cosmopolitanism, to which little academic attention has been paid. Taking Life & Times of Michael K as a typical case, this paper aims to investigate the origin, aesthetic representation, and historical generation of Coetzee’s cosmopolitanism. It holds that Coetzee reconstructs the discourse of the national independent revolution in South Africa on the basis of his cosmopolitanism. Mainly to transcend nationalism, his cosmopolitanism stems from his “de-Africanization” of identity and political anxiety. Despite its vision of racial reconciliation and its pursuit of universal values, this cosmopolitanism is contradictory to Africa’s decolonization politics in the postcolonial context.

Title: The Closest Words: On Concealed Shame in Alice Munros Dear Life

ABSTRACT: Shame is one kind of complex and profound emotion. In Alice Munros

Dear Life, shame is repeatedly presented as the core component of the works emotional level. With Munros dialogic imagination featuring contradictions and conflicts, shame also transcends the limitations of emotion and extends to other levels. This paper chooses four heterogeneous perspectives, including gender, consumption, ethics, and existence, to explore the specific aesthetic values of shame in Munros stories. The process of shame, as a born emotion, is actually the psychological process of turning back to the self. It inspires individual self-discernment, calls for the moral reconstruction of ethical subjects, and stimulates peoples souls to search for their true selves.

Title: Key Features of French and Francophone Narratology in the New Century

ABSTRACT: Narratology was born in France. Since the late 1970s, French structuralist narratology has met increasing challenges and seems to have been surpassed bypostclassical narratology.Despite its dwindling international influence, however, French and Francophone narratology continue to develop and renew itself. On the one hand, it maintains a close link to major trends of narratology in the world by emphasizing transnational and trans-regional cooperation as well as interdisciplinary, intermedial, and context-based methods. On the other hand, it emphasizes the importance of inheriting, revising, and developing classical legacies, and continues to be inspired by French linguistic theories such as enunciative linguistics, textual linguistics, and the study of discourse genres to reflect on narratological issues, resulting in unique advancements. French and Francophone narratology can thus provide approaches to contemporary narrative studies that offer alternatives to the postclassical developments in both theory and practice.

Title: The Intellectual Evolution of British Cultural Materialist Criticism: Origins, Controversies, and Transformations

ABSTRACT: Since its emergence in the 1980s, British cultural materialism has been juxtaposed, if not conflated with, new historicism. Nevertheless, it is crucial to acknowledge the distinctiveness of British cultural materialism. Its origins were deeply intertwined with the legacy of British New Left thought. Moreover, the internal debate has accentuated the radical political stance inherent in cultural materialism. The later orientation of British cultural materialism towards gender studies reflects a shift towards post-structuralist identity politics. In light of these considerations, this paper endeavors to revisit the intellectual trajectory of British cultural materialist criticism through three pivotal junctures: intellectual inception, internal debates, and paradigm shift. It seeks to challenge the prevalent notion that cultural materialism merely functions as a British offshoot of new historicism, as well as to underscore the distinctive essence and unique theoretical development of British Marxist literary criticism.

Title: The Elderly and Erotism: On Aging in Sabbaths Theater

ABSTRACT: Sabbaths Theatre is an important work on the narrative of old age in the late period of American writer Philip Roth. The mainstream view of old age, represented by Cicero, is that old people entering their twilight years should be silent and intelligent people who renounce desires and submit to transcendence. However, in Sabbaths Theatre, elderly characters break through established stereotypes, and the novel is full of anti-mainstream negative elements. Sabbath and Drenka resist loneliness and ageing in their old age by turning to sexual abundance, and they temporarily forget the world through the sharp physical experience brought by crazy sex, so as to combat the anxiety brought on by the thought of death. Inspired by Georges Batailles view of desire, this paper aims to reveal that the eroticism and transgressive desires of the elderly in Sabbaths Theatre are de-concealed sexual violence, and that the author uses erotism as a lens to see how lonely and anxious elderly subjects offend and confront the unauthentic nature of the ideological world.

Title: A Study of Lauren Berlants Affect Theory

ABSTRACT: Lauren Berlant is regarded as one of the leading Western theorists of affect. Berlant positions affect in relation to history, power, and norms, and sees it as formative for subjects, social relations, and politics, emphasizing especially its capability to bind power with body. By inspecting the operating mechanisms of nation, public sphere, public culture, citizenship, and rights in ordinary life, Berlant shows how affect is shaped and manipulated by power. She also meticulously anatomizes the affective form of cruel optimismin neoliberalism, exposes the ways in which violence and oppression are carried out on affective and emotional levels, and attempts to offer ways of defusing affective crises for people trapped in impasses and trauma. Berlants affect theory provides a new and valuable perspective on understanding affective culture and politics today.

Title: Golem, Superhero, and Levinas: Graphic Narrative in Yossel: April 19, 1943

ABSTRACT: Joe Kuberts Yossel: April 19, 1943 is a classic work in the realm of graphic novels about the history of the Holocaust, following Art Spiegelmans Maus. Unlike Spiegelmans metaphorical technique of substituting animal faces for human faces, Kubert employs a realistic approach by depicting multiple human faces, thereby reconstructing the courageous resistance of the Jews against the German forces during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in World War II. Fusing the golem of traditional Jewish culture and the superheroes of American popular culture, these faces engage in a dialogue with Emmanuel Levinass ethical resistance to visualizing the face of the other. This essay focuses on these three interconnected graphic narrative dimensions, arguing that Yossel: April 19, 1943 charges God of absence during the Holocaust, presents the authors dual cultural identity influenced by the notion of the Americanization of the Holocaustamong American Jews, and challenges Levinass opinion that it is impossible to visually reproduce the face. Through meticulously depicting the eyes on the faces of the characters looking beyond the text, the work forces the reader to closely examine and recognize the pain of the Jews.
